Clinical Education Program
The Immunogenetics Laboratory provides a comprehensive overview of laboratory operations to interested clinicians with a wide variety of backgrounds. Members of the staff explain the scientific principles of all tests performed in the laboratory, discuss the interpretation of test results and review case studies. The length of time and the focus of the program is customized to fit each clinician’s area of interest. Please contact the laboratory to determine the best time to visit.
Technologist Training
All laboratory technologists complete a comprehensive training program in preparation for the Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) exam given by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI). Technologists are trained to perform and troubleshoot all of the assays used in the laboratory. They learn how to interpret test results and apply the data generated by the assays to the particular transplant requirements. Once certified, technologists are required to complete continuing education courses to retain their certification. More senior technologists with five years’ experience in histocompatibility testing are eligible for certification as a Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS).
Continuing Education
Staff members are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of continuing education activities. The Immunogenetics faculty and staff are active participants in both national and international meetings. The lab sponsors an ongoing series of lectures that allows the staff to follow current topics in immunology, immunogenetics and transplantation. Faculty members and other members of the transplant community provide presentations on their area of expertise. The university also provides many opportunities for continuing education on a weekly basis.
